Why 7th Man Analytics, you may ask? Well – that’s a good question. You see, I’m a hockey fan and our name has its roots in Boston. Back in the “old days” the Boston Bruins home ice was located in the Boston Garden (or the “Gahd’n if you’re from Boston). It was said in those early days that coming to play at the Boston Garden was fairly intimidating for visiting teams. The seating was so close to the action that fans were literally hanging over the ice up in the balconies. As such, the fans themselves – as a group – became known as the “Seventh Man”, a reference to the notion that there are six hockey players on the ice and the fans constituted yet another player – indeed, a “Seventh Man”.
Boston fans have a reputation for being very passionate and knowledgeable when it comes to their sports teams. They are wholly invested in the outcome of every play, every contest, and every battle, both big and small. They study every element of the game. They understand its history and that perspective helps them appreciate the game at depths that may be overlooked by the casual observer. They see things that others don’t. They use these insights to predict what’s going to happen next, how the match-ups will fare, and what strategy will most likely exploit their opponent’s weaknesses.
